Wan Yee Ng, a 41 years-old woman, was caught trying to smuggle 29 turtles, which she wrapped in socks in her duffle bag. These were protected Easter box turtles, and she was caught trying to smuggle them across a Vermont lake into Canada by kayak.
Police were alerted that Ng, her husband and another person intended to sell these turtles on the Chinese black market. Police caught her, and she was found guilty of smuggling in US District court, facing up to 10 years in prison and a fine up to $250,000.
